The Lord Wandsworth Foundation had a huge impact on Hugh’s life. After his father died when he was only 12 years old, the family had very little money. They moved in with relatives but schooling was a big concern.
By good luck Hugh’s family heard of the Lord Wandsworth Foundation and Hugh and his younger brother, Christopher, were accepted as pupils at Lord Wandsworth College. As well as boarding fees, transport to and from home each term and clothing were included. After attending Lord Wandsworth for 5 years, Hugh gained entry to Merton College, Oxford.
The Foundation continues to provide support to pupils who have lost a parent, needing £1.4million per annum to fund the Foundation Scholars.
In Hugh’s own words “Lord Wandsworth College had changed my life and was the foundation of all that followed”.
In fondest memory of a true gentleman - rest in peace dear Hugh. x
I knew Hugh for more than fifty years and it was a particular pleasure to be a Trustee under his inspiring leadership of The Sternians Trust Fund.
